Leaving Everything Most Loved

Jacqueline Winspear has given life to the character of Maisie Dobbs. Throughout the series she gave us the mystery and the investigator to find its solution. However, she was also added an emotional layer to Maisie. I can feel the underlying sadness she feels in life. She is not a joyful person. She and James say they love each other, but I don't feel that depth.
Maisie Dobbs is going off in a new direction. I look forward to the next chapter in her life's journey. I hoping she finds some joy.

Elegy for Eddie

Well, I have caught up with Ms. Winspear and the publication of the Maisie Dobbs series. I looked on her web site and didn't see if or when No. 10 would be published or even thought about. As it stands this series could end with this book. After all, it was about WWI and its aftermath. This book is on the brink of WWII.
I felt a real closeness to Maisie Dobbs in this book. I could feel her pain when she realized that she could not save or even make the lives of her friends and associates better. She couldn't make them better as her definition of 'better' did not always mean it was their 'better'. Maybe it's time for Maisie to stop and smell the roses.

A Lesson in Secrets

I really like the Maisie Dobbs series. However, we are on a "Series" track. That means that what in the normal course of events an action would be taken, it is left hanging at the end of each book to entice you to buy the next book. I am not going to be a 'spoiler' so I will leave out the details. I just wish the publisher and writer would take the story to the next level and save me from hanging in suspense. I already like the series. I am going to read the next book for that reason. I am not going to continue reading it because the author and/or the publisher has decided to dangle a carrot at the end of the book.

The Mapping of Love and Death

It seems to me that the greater number of books in a series the more filler you have to wade through to get to the meat of the story. This Maisie Dobbs book was no exception.
I liked the story and really connected to the characters of Maisie and her supporting cast of characters. However, I was given a complete run down of the other six books as if I hadn't read them. I understand that some readers pick up a book in the middle of the series and don't have a clue about the background. I would think they could be enticed to read/buy the previous books and find out for themselves. A lot of this book was educating me on the profession of a cartographer. Most of it was not pertinent to the story.
I am looking forward to #8, 'A Lesson in Secrets', as the story line seems to be taking a turn as the book ends. Some threads were left hanging to entice me to continue on...and I will!

Messenger of Truth
No. 4 of the Series
This is the fourth "Maisie Dobbs" mystery. Each "Maisie" book seems to get better than the last. This one is no exception. It is also the mid-point of the series (there have been eight books published to date), almost as if you were at the mid-point of an epic novel. This seems to be the climax-the turning point of the story. For Maisie it seems to be a new beginning in her life's journey. I thought I might take a break from her stories, but now I must forge ahead to see how she fares on this journey.
An Incomplete Revenge
No. 5 in the Series
So far I have liked every one of the 'Maisie Dobbs' mysteries...this one is no exception. Ms. Winspear gives you enough information where you think you have solved the mystery. In the end you find you almost got it right, but didn't figure out all of the details...and you could have. The continuing story of the lives of the main characters keeps my interest as much as the current mystery to be solved. I do find though that I can't read the next book in the series right away. I have to give myself a break with something different...like a good 'cozy' mystery or my old stand-by, Regency Romance, or even a good biography.
Among the Mad
No. 6 in the series

Reading Maisie Dobbs is not a read to take lightly. Although, Ms. Winspear's stories follow a formula she does not let it distract the reader from her message. Maisie Dobbs is a psychologist and investigator in a period after WWI and before WWII. She and her assistant Billy plod through the case in question clue by clue. Through some tuition on the part of Maisie a conclusion is reached, but not always what the reader expects. Along the way you learn a lot of history as if you were there. There are two more books in the series, but I have to digest this one before I can move to the next book.

Pardonable Lies

As always, Maisie starts out with one case, but ties it to a few others and solves them all. When I start one of her books, I don't want to put it down. I haven't said that about too many books that I have read in the past few years. I did find myself skimming over some of the story at the end...once all of the lose ends were tied up. I will be reading the next book in the series and the next...and the next.

Maisie Dobbs

I have found a new Mystery series that I really like. Thanks to one the patron's at the branch library where I work for recommending it to me. This is the first book of series and takes place during and right after WWI. Maisie is a Psychologist and Investigator with a little ESP talent, so there is a fun side to the story. Sounds like a good TV series to me.

I have already finished the second book in the series, Birds of A Feather. It is just as good as the first one. I can see a plot pattern developing, but it doesn't distract from the mystery and suspense. There is a lot of verbiage meant to educate the reader. However, it is woven into the thread of the story. In other words, the story does not stop for you to learn some bit of history or how to do something. Now, on to the next book: Pardonable Lies.
Since I have been stuck in the Regency period for several years, the Maisie Dobbs Mysteries are a refreshing change. I'll return the favor of our library patron and recommend Maisie to you!
