My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really liked this classic that was on our Book Club list for 2020. Several members did not like it at all. There are a lot of characters to keep straight and most of the time I didn't. The structure of the story was disconcerting and added another deterrent to keeping the characters straight. The story was divided into time and place segments that overlapped. The beginning seemed to be the end and the end was the beginning. That being said, there were several passages that I went back and studied. They seem to be put in place to give the reader insight in the author. I wondered how they fit into his life and the people in his world.

This read reminded me of reading 'The Great Gatsby' in high school. I learned about symbolism that writers use to convey hidden messages to the reader. I tried to figure out if Mr. Wilder used this technique. If it was there, I didn't find it. One member said she thought 'The Eighth Day' meant that God created the Earth in seven days and we were to take over and get to work on the eighth one. Another said the writer's concern with evolution that prompted the title. I never really got to that depth in meaning. It was just a story with some life and history lessons thrown into the mix. I still think it was auto-biographical.
Note: Not sure what happened to John?

If you like to read classics, I am recommending this one.

This was a book club selection for me. I had never read a John Grisham book and enjoyed reading it. You will get a true picture of what it was like to make your living by growing and picking cotton. My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was a Book Club assignment. It was very hard for me to relate to the reality of this woman's life. In fact, after about 50 pages I thought I might give it up. Tara seemed to be a character in a book not a real living person. Her situation seemed unreal and she didn't seem motivated to do anything about it. Even when she had people supporting her and advising her to move away; she refused to leave. However, she is a real person that has lived through, what to me, is a nightmare. I am utterly amazed that she was able to overcome her childhood and family to the extent that she did.

I started pulling for her after pages 242 and 243. I saw hope when her professor give her this advice.
<i style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<i style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">"You act like someone who is impersonating someone else. And it's as if you think your life depends on it." Dr. Kerry page 242
<i style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

He continues on page 243: "The most powerful determinant of who you are is inside you," he said. "Professor Steinberg says this is Pygmalion. Think of the story, Tara." He paused, his eyes fierce his voice piercing. "She was just a cockney in a nice dress. Until she believed in herself. Then it didn't matter what dress she wore."

Tara did not disappoint. I think this was a turning point for her. It certainly wasn't the end. There was much more to come, but she persevered and won in the end. Recommend.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Luckily we had my phone and GPS or we would have never found the museum. It is in a neighborhood next to the Ruland home. He built the Depot structure to house his collection of toy trains and memorabilia. There is a main floor and a balcony full of trains. How many I do not know. Daniel Hipp is the Trainmaster and Docent. He described what we were going to see and some history of the collection.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was really fascinated with the amount of research that Mr. Gladwell did to write this book. His insights were completely out of my 'box'. It certainly got me to thinking at a different level.

He defined an 'outlier' as something that is situated away from or classed differently from a main or related body. Also, a statistical observation that is markedly different in value from the other of the sample. "Outliers are those who have been given opportunities and who have the strength and presence of mind to seize them."

Briefly, here are some of his outliers:
1. The year you were born matters as related to the cut-off date for joining a sport team.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I have had this book for a long time and have read parts now and then. I have watched the video of the TV Series with Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell which the book documents. I decided to really read 'The Power of Myth' chapter by chapter, word by word. Most of the time I did not understand what I was reading, but at other times the words inspired me. This lead to the following passages that I wanted to save to read again. Maybe some day I will read the book again to see if the words make sense to me after a period of time and experience has passed. Joseph Campbell's basic words to live by have been in my vocabulary since I watched that video. "Follow Your Bliss"
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The following are those words that I want to ponder.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 12:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Moyers: So there are mythological rituals at work in our society. The ceremony of marriage is one. The ceremony of the inauguration of a President or judge is another. What are some other rituals that are important in society today?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell: Joining the army, putting on a uniform, is another. You're giving up your personal life and accepting a socially determined manner of life in the service of the society of which you are a member. That is why I think it is obscene to judge people in terms of civil law for performances that they rendered in time of war. They were acting not as individuals, they were acting as agents of something above them and to which they had by dedication given themselves. To judge them as though they were individual human beings is totally improper.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 17: I don't know what's coming, any more that Yeats* knew, but when you come to the end of one time and the beginning of a new one, it's a period of tremendous pain and turmoil. The threat we feel, and every body feels-well, there is this notion of Armageddon coming, you know?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">*refer to Yeats poem "The Second Coming".
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 28: "Here you have the important transition that took place about 500 B.C. This is the date of the Buddha and of Pythagoras and Confucius ad Lao-tze, if there was a Lao-tzu. This is the awakening of man's reason. No longer is he informed and governed by the animal powers. No longer is he guided by the analogy of the planted earth, no longer by the courses of the planets---but by reason.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 56:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Moyers: What is a metaphor?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell: A metaphor is an image that suggest something else...The reference of the metaphor in religious traditions is to something transcendent that is not literally any thing.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 57: Campbell: The inner world is the world of your requirements and your energies ad your structure and your possibilities that meets the outer world. And the outer world is the field of your incarnations. That's where you are. You've got to keep both going. As Novalis said, "The seat of the soul is there where the inner and outer worlds meet."
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 58: There has to be a training to help you open your ears so that you can begin to hear metaphorically instead of concretely.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 60: I think the clergy is really not doing its proper work. It does not speak about the connotations of the metaphors but is stuck with the ethics of good and evil.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 66: Affirmation is difficult. We always affirm with conditions. I affirm the world on condition that it gets to be the way Santa Claus told me it ought to be. But affirming it the way it is--that's the hard thing. and that is what rituals are about.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 67: ...Eternity isn't some later time. Eternity isn't even a long time. Eternity has nothing to do with time. Eternity is that dimension of here and now that all thinking in temporal terms cuts off.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">And if you don't get it here, you won't get it anywhere. The problem with heaven is that you will be having such a good time there, you won't even think of eternity. You'll just have this unending delight in the beatific vision of God. But the experience of eternity right here and now, in all things whether thought of as good or as evil, is the function of life.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 118:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Moyers: What happens when you follow your bliss?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell: You come to bliss. ... We are having experiences all the time which may on occasion render some sense of this, a little intuition of where your bliss is. Grab it. No one can tell you what it is going to be. You have to learn to recognize your depth.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 149:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Moyers: What's my ego?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell: What you think you want, what you will to believe, what you think you can afford, what you decide to love, what you regard yourself as bound to.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 154:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Moyers: What are the "thou shalts" of a child that he needs to shed?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell: Every one that inhibits his self-fulfillment.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 182:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Moyers: So when you say, "Save the earth", we're talking about saving ourselves.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell: Yes. All this hope for something happening in society has to wait for something in the human psyche a whole new way of experiencing a society.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 207:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Moyers: As you've moved among various world views, dipping in and out of cultures, civilizations, and religions, have you found something in common in every culture that creates the need for God?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell: Anyone who has had an experience of mystery knows that there is a dimension of the universe that is not that which is available to his senses.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Campbell
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Page 229: Just sheer life cannot be said to have a purpose, because look at all the different purposes it has all over the place. But each incarnation, you might say, has a potentiality, and the mission of life is to live that potentiality. How do you do it? My answer is, "Follow your bliss." There's something inside you that knows when you are in the center, that knows when you're on the beam or off the beam. And if you get off the beam to earn money, you've lost your life, And if you stay in the center and don't get any money, you still have your bliss.

This biography gave me a whole new perspective on past history and its heroes. It was slow reading at first, but I gradually found myself drawn to Washington Irving and his life. Along with his story came the history that was unfolding inthe United States and our leaders.

Some of my thoughts-
Fame is fleeting. I remember Washington Irving stories from my grade school days. I think of him as Ichabod Crane from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. However, for his time and our time he is so much more that these two stories. I wonder if other people remember him only because of them.

Notes from the book:
"Washington Irving was the first American writer to live by his pen and the first to have an international reputation." He paved the way for authors such as: James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allen Poe. Their main source of income was not their writing. Irving was constantly trying to find a way to make money. He was educated as a lawyer, but it didn't really suit him. At first he wrote under pseudonyms because he was afraid people wouldn't like what he wrote. His first book, 'A History of New York', was written by Diedrich Knickerbocker. (The New York Knicks owe him their name.)

He always had a wanderlust and headed for England where he found himself running the family trading company. He was helping his brother Peter who was sickly most of his life. He didn't return to the United State until fourteen years later. While there he wrote 'The Sketch Book' and 'Tales of a Traveller' under the name of Geoffrey Crayon. 'The Life and Voyage of Christopher Columbus' was the first publication that carried his name as the author.

He spent several years as a Minister from the United States to the Spanish Court. Finally, he returned home to stay. His crowning achievement was his five volume set, 'The Life of George Washington'. When he was five, he had met and was blessed by George Washington. He had always felt that it was his destiny to do write about his life.

Irving was born in 1783 and died at the age of 76 in 1859. Over his lifetime "Politicians, writers, actors, artists, and wannabes of every type clamored to be associated with him. A friend to six presidents, he had danced with Dolley Madison in the White House, consoled Martin Van Buren in London, flattered a young Queen Isabella in Madrid as John Tyler's minister to Spain. John Jacob Astor tapped him to be his personal biographer, Mary Shelley had a crush on him. Edgar Allen Poe flattered him. Sir Walter Scott loved him. Dickens, Longfellow, and Haw throne adored him. Even those like James Fenimore Cooper who loathed him gave his work their grudging respect." (found on page 408) Washington Irving was the 'Rock Star' of his time.

It took me several months to read this book. There was so much to absorb that I couldn't do it straight through. It was slow reading and it took me a while to warm up to Washington Irving. However, when he died and was laid to rest at Sleepy Hollow I had tears running down my face.

I highly recommend this biography it will give you a real appreciation for Irving and the times in which he lived. Thank you Mr. Jones for such a wonderful tribute.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If you want to join an American subculture hiding in the Delta of Mississippi, this is a great way to do it. Richard Grant*is a Brit who has come to live in the Delta and still lives in Mississippi at this time. He has the personality as an outsider to be able to gain the confidence of the insiders. Also, it helped that he had a British accent. At one point in the book, one black man said: "He's not white, he's British." I loved the Field Trip chapter, but couldn't really understand the significance of Chapter 5, The Oncologist's Hitmen. The chapters that went into depth about the 'Blues' music didn't interest me. I don't give out a lot of '5 stars', this book was definitely a ' five star' book . Good writing and interesting stories that kept me wanting to go to Mississippi and take the Field Trip.
Siegfried S. Johnson, Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, USA
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">To quote Rev. Johnson: "The theme is drawn from the writings of early
Christianity in Ireland, Thin Places, a term used
by Celtic Christians from
about the 5th century,
having in that beautiful
land developed a strong
sense of sacred space,
certain trees, caves,
streams, and mountains
regarded as sanctuaries of
nature.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In a 'Thin Place' the veil between this world and the divine world, heaven and earth, seemed somehow sheer, porous allowing God's glory to seep through to our awareness."
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This series got me to think about my 'thin places'. <i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">These come to mind:
<i style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Muir Woods, California
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When I entered the woods, I felt a sense of peace. I needed to be still and quiet. All was quiet, although there were many other people there.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I attended a wedding in the Bohemian Grove. All of the guests were driven into the woods by bus from Santa Rosa. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I wish they had taught history in high school like this. Mr. Rutherford takes the people and their stories through time. The stories are fiction, but the history is real. After I read Sarum I wanted to go North and read London. He moves the reader through different time periods, updating the families with stories of the descendants of the original families. A ancestral chart is included along with maps from the different eras. The chart was of the fictional families. I wish he had included a chart of the different kings and queens during each era*. If you are interested in English history from a personal perspective, I highly recommend London.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">*As I read the book, I made my own chart of Kings and Queens that appeared in the book and some events that occurred in each era by chapter. An accurate list can be found at this link:

This is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime.

This story was so well written I felt like it was a fictional account on a real event in history. It is not, but all of the events and characters are so well portrayed that I wanted to make it real. I knew when I was reading it that no good would come at the end. However, I loved the the story up until the end. I will admit that I skipped most of the end because I knew it would be too sad. Luckily, there was a 'Codicil' so I found out the rest of the story.

A couple of quotes from the book that spoke to me:

"It is the one lesson I learned well at the asylum-to live each day as it comes, day by day, and to dwell neither on regrets of the past nor worries about the future-both of which are beyond my powers to influence." Spoken by May Dodd after she arrived as the Cheyenne camp. page 89

"Furthermore,..."is it possible that if a warrior believes in his 'medicine', he can make it come true? A fascinating concept, is it not? And one that lies at the very core of 'pagan religion."
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">"And perhaps of our own," I pointed out, "for now you speak of faith, Helen."

Quite!", said Helen,..."That is to say, faith in the power of God, in the power of Art, in the power of medicine men and medicine animals-it's all one, finally, don't you agree, May?"
Conversation between Helen and May while Helen was painting birds on the Cheyenne warriors to protect them from bullets. page 137
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">My rating: 5 of 5 stars
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I loved this book. It is written in a style that made the signers of The Declaration of Independence become human. It gives a glimpse into the personal lives of each signer as well as what part they each played in the quest for independence from England. It is not a book that you can read cover to cover. It is not a page turner. I decided to read it in small bites reading just a couple of entries each day. It was the non-fiction read for our book club this year. We each took a minor signer and reported on him at our meeting. I chose Lewis Morris*, New York. However, as I read I found some fun tidbits about the different signers.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">(See my 'Notes' below)
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The authors chose a loose writing style that makes this an easy and enjoyable read. They also included The Declaration and a time line of events leading up to the signing and a Time Line from the beginning of the process until George Washington was inaugurated. There is also a Miscellany of independence; such as, who and how many signed which documents.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Highly recommend! It will answer some questions and motivate you, is so inclined, to make a deeper study of the beginning of our Republic.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It's hard for me to review this book, because I really don't care for the modern day suspense/mystery genre. I found that I could only read a chapter before I wanted to put it down. I didn't want to read it at night for fear that I would obsess about what was happening. I finally made myself finish it. It wasn't a bad ending. There were several tense moments for the characters, but all came out okay. I guess I was afraid it wouldn't. Still don't think I will read any more in this genre. Recommend if you like foreign intrigue and the highest levels of the banking industry.
